Gross = Length × Height, summed over every wall

Net = Gross − openings (Width × Height × quantity)
Module
Effective size = (block length + joint) × (block height + joint)
Blocks
Blocks = Net area ÷ effective size, × (1 + waste %), rounded up
Pallets
Pallets = Blocks ÷ blocks per pallet, rounded up

Assumptions

  • Counts are for a single-leaf wall laid in running bond — one block face per unit of wall area. Block thickness (4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 in) does not change the count, only the weight and cost per unit.
  • The mortar joint is applied to both the bed and head joints, which is why a 15⅝ × 7⅝ in block is sold as a nominal 16 × 8 in unit and works out at 1.125 blocks per square foot.
  • Block sizes vary by region and manufacturer. The presets are conveniences — measure your actual block or take the dimensions from the supplier's datasheet.
  • Mortar, grout, rebar and cores filled with concrete are not estimated here. Grouted cells and reinforcement follow your structural drawings, not a quantity estimate.

Quantity estimation only. Block walls carrying load, retaining soil, or exceeding modest heights require engineered design — reinforcement, grouted cells, footings and lateral support are structural and code matters, not estimating ones.

Frequently asked questions

How many concrete blocks do I need per square foot?
About 1.125 standard 8 × 8 × 16 in blocks per square foot of wall, or 112.5 blocks per 100 ft². In metric, a 440 × 215 mm block with a 10 mm joint gives just under 10 blocks per square metre.
Does block thickness change how many blocks I need?
No. The face size decides the count, so a 6 in and a 12 in block cover the same wall area per unit. Thickness changes weight, price, pallet quantity and how many you can lift in a day — not the number.
Should I subtract door and window openings?
Yes, for anything of real size. A single garage door opening can be 15% of a wall's area, which is far more than any sensible waste allowance. Add each opening above and the calculator removes it from the net area.
How many blocks come on a pallet?
It varies a lot — commonly 90 to 180 depending on block size, weight and supplier. Because there is no universal figure, this calculator asks you for the pallet count rather than assuming one; leave it empty and you will get a loose block count instead.
