- Walls = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height
- Net area
- Net = Gross − openings (Width × Height × quantity)
- Sheets
- Sheets = Net × (1 + waste %) ÷ sheet area, rounded up
Assumptions
- Sheet counts are area-based. Real hanging depends on layout: a wall slightly wider than your sheet length forces an extra sheet regardless of area, so treat the count as a purchase estimate and plan your layout for long walls.
- A 10% waste allowance suits square rooms with a few openings. Rooms with angles, soffits or many small walls generate far more offcuts.
- Openings are subtracted in full. Many hangers deliberately sheet over door and window openings and cut them out afterwards for straighter seams — if you work that way, set the waste allowance higher or leave openings out.
- Joint compound, tape and screws are not estimated here. Those depend on seam length and finish level rather than sheet area.
Frequently asked questions
- How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12 × 10 ft room?
- With 8 ft walls and the ceiling included, that is 472 ft² gross. Take off a door and window (about 32 ft²) and you need 440 ft². At 32 ft² per 4 × 8 sheet with 10% waste, buy 16 sheets.
- Should I use 4 × 8 or 4 × 12 sheets?
- Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, which are the hardest seams to finish invisibly — so 4 × 12 is worth it on long walls if you can carry and manoeuvre them. For DIY work in tight stairwells, 4 × 8 is far easier to handle.
- Do I need to subtract windows and doors?
- For ordering, yes — large openings materially change the count. Note that many professionals hang straight over openings and cut them out after, trading material for straighter seams. If that is your plan, use the gross area instead.
- How much extra drywall should I buy?
- 10% covers offcuts in a straightforward square room. Go to 15–20% where there are lots of short walls, angles, or a vaulted ceiling, since every cut leaves an unusable remnant.
